{"id":1437,"date":"2015-03-09T22:09:13","date_gmt":"2015-03-10T05:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blt.homenet.org\/wordpress\/?p=1437"},"modified":"2017-08-07T21:41:47","modified_gmt":"2017-08-08T04:41:47","slug":"fermentation-chamber-ac-replacement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bt.beerprojects.com\/wordpress\/?p=1437","title":{"rendered":"Fermentation Chamber &#8211; AC Replacement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post is long overdue, but here is a quick recap of my AC replacement.<\/p>\n<p>About a year ago the window AC unit in the fermentation chamber went out when I was making <a title=\"Beer 8 \u2013 Black Rye IPA\" href=\"http:\/\/bt.beerprojects.com\/wordpress\/?p=1241\">batch +8<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m pretty sure this is the reason that batch ended in bottle bombs. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t too disappointed in the AC failing because I felt that it was working more than it should. \u00a0It appeared to let a lot of cool air out of the unit itself causing it to kick on more than I thought it should. \u00a0So I decided I&#8217;d reuse the guts of a small cube fridge. \u00a0In hindsight, I wish I had used a bit larger of a cooler as it appears that I can only hold a 35 degree temperature difference. \u00a0This is sufficient for fermenting, but not good enough to get a good cold crash when the garage is in the 80s.<\/p>\n<p>Taking apart the mini-fridge was pretty easy once I bought a pair of sheet metal scissors. \u00a0From there it was pretty easy to mount the cooling tray and add the insulation. \u00a0I certainly didn&#8217;t sand and paint as good as I did in the original build, but it works. \u00a0Finally, I added a pc fan to continually blow across the cooling tray; without it I noticed that it would ice up when trying to cool. \u00a0I&#8217;m seeing a bit more condensation that I expected and have a towel to catch things. \u00a0I&#8217;m trying to limit the amount of times I open and close the fridge for now, but this is something I&#8217;ll have to keep an eye on. \u00a0All in all, it works and I&#8217;m back to brewing!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg_displayed_gallery mceItem\" src=\"http:\/\/bt.beerprojects.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/nextgen-attach_to_post\/preview\/id--1438\" alt=\"\" data-mce-placeholder=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is long overdue, but here is a quick recap of my AC replacement.
