{"id":561,"date":"2013-02-03T21:35:09","date_gmt":"2013-02-04T05:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blt.homenet.org\/wordpress\/?p=561"},"modified":"2018-02-09T22:59:40","modified_gmt":"2018-02-10T05:59:40","slug":"new-phone-samsung-note-2-and-already-rooted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bt.beerprojects.com\/wordpress\/?p=561","title":{"rendered":"New phone, Samsung Note 2, and already rooted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just got a new phone.\u00a0 <a title=\"Cyanogen 7.2.0 Update on my Evo Shift\" href=\"http:\/\/bt.beerprojects.com\/wordpress\/?p=429\">After working really hard on my Evo shift<\/a> I just couldn&#8217;t take the slowness anymore.\u00a0 So I upgraded to a huge phone, the Samsung Note 2 on Sprint.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still not too sure this is the phone for me as I&#8217;m worried about the size of it.\u00a0 I almost bought the phone from Best Buy, but they were out of the titanium version and would have to mail it in.\u00a0 So I decided to get it through Costco.\u00a0 From Costco they had it as the same price, but covered the $36 upgrade fee and gave an additional car charger, case, and screen protector.\u00a0 The phone was also mailed and it took about a week for it to come in.\u00a0 Once I got the phone I charged the battery to full then went to work transferring phones over.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRBrDq7Hafd7r1bhROazqZcPr7Ffi5UVewpFETMEaCpDY6Iew4pRg\" width=\"208\" height=\"243\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Samsung Note 2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>Prepare for Transfer<\/h1>\n<p>In order to do an easy transfer from my old phone I did a Titanium backup of my apps. More specifically:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go into the <a title=\"Google Play Store - Titanium Backup Root\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Titanium Backup * root<\/a> app<\/li>\n<li>Select Menu -&gt; Batch actions -&gt;Backup all user apps + system data<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This should backup all the SMS messages too, but just in case it didn&#8217;t work is used <a title=\"SMS Backup &amp; Restore\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">SMS Backup &amp; Restore<\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Rooting<\/h1>\n<p>I have the root version and really want to keep root on my phone.\u00a0 Though at this time I have no desire to flash any ROMs or add a different recovery, but still want to get the OTA updates from Sprint\/Samsung.\u00a0 So I followed the directions posted on the <a title=\" [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - Root Injected L900VPALJC +[TWRP] + more\" href=\"http:\/\/forum.xda-developers.com\/showthread.php?t=1978470\" target=\"_blank\">XDA forums<\/a>.\u00a0 At the time of writing this post the <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">VPALJC<\/span><\/b> was the most current ROM.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve copied the steps I followed, pretty much exactly as listed on the forum, so that I can recall what I did in the past.\u00a0 I suggest reading the forum as it has a better chance of being kept up to date, whereas this post will be a simple moment in time.<\/p>\n<p>Steps I followed to root and still maintain OTA updates.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From your computer do the following\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a title=\"ODIN\" href=\"http:\/\/d-h.st\/UO0\" target=\"_blank\">Odin<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Unzip Odin<\/li>\n<li>Download the SPH-L900 (Samsung note 2) drivers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/support\/owners\/product\/SPH-L900TSASPR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Samsung&#8217;s<\/a> site. Click on the <b>Manuals &amp; Downloads<\/b> tab at the bottom and then on <b>Software<\/b> for the latest driver.<\/li>\n<li>Move the driver exe to the ODIN folder<\/li>\n<li>Download the <a title=\"mrRobinson's XDA profile\" href=\"http:\/\/forum.xda-developers.com\/member.php?u=3355398\" target=\"_blank\">mrRobinson<\/a>&#8216;s version of the firmware,\u00a0<b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">VPALJC<\/span><\/b>, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.androidfilehost.com\/?fid=9390214368362234418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">root66_SPR_L900VPALJC.7z<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Unzip the file and place into the ODIN folder<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>From the phone\n<ol>\n<li>Put the phone into download mode.\n<ol>\n<li>Turn it off<\/li>\n<li>Then hold vol. down + home + power<\/li>\n<li>Choose accept to go into download mode<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>From the computer\n<ol>\n<li>Start the ODIN program<\/li>\n<li>Then in the PDA field and select the firmware file, root66_SPR_L900VPALJ1.tar.md5<\/li>\n<li>Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.<\/li>\n<li>Click start and wait for it to download the files to the phone, below is the message log I saw<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<pre>Enter CS for MD5..\r\nCheck MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..\r\nPlease wait..\r\nroot66_SPR_L900VPALJC.tar.md5 is valid.\r\nChecking MD5 finished Sucessfully..\r\nLeave CS..All threads completed. (succeed 0 \/ failed 0)\r\nAdded!!\r\nID:0\/003&gt; Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)..\r\nFile analysis..\r\nSetupConnection..\r\nInitialzation..\r\nGet PIT for mapping..\r\nFirmware update start..\r\nboot.img\r\nNAND Write Start!!\r\ncache.img\r\nhidden.img\r\nmodem.bin\r\nparam.bin\r\nrecovery.img\r\nsboot.bin\r\nsystem.img\r\ntombstones.img\r\ntz.img\r\nRQT_CLOSE !!\r\nRES OK !!\r\nRemoved!!\r\nRemain Port ....\u00a0 0\r\nAll threads completed. (succeed 1 \/ failed 0)<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>When done let phone reboot and the phone is rooted<\/li>\n<li>I haven&#8217;t used or tested this yet to retain root privileges through an OTA update\n<ol>\n<li>,Get <a title=\"OTA Rootkeeper\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">OTA Rootkeeper<\/a> from the Google Play store on your phone<\/li>\n<li>Open OTA Rootkeeper and click &#8220;Protect Root&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Then after you receive a notification for an OTA update you should go into OTA Rootkeeper and click something to re-enable root.\n<ol>\n<li>Since I haven&#8217;t had to use this yet I don&#8217;t know what I will have to click nor do I know that this will work as the notes in the app say &#8220;<strong>Useless with: Samsung phones updated with<\/strong> KIES or <strong>Odin<\/strong> and older devices using YAFFS filesystems only, and device flashing entiere system partition&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>I suppose I&#8217;ll cross this road when I get to it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Well after things rooted successful the phone restarted and everything worked just fine and root was enabled.<\/p>\n<h1>Transferring Apps &amp; Data<\/h1>\n<p>Well with things rooted I just needed to get the apps back through Titanium backup.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Move the SD card to the new phone<\/li>\n<li>Download the <a title=\"Google Play Store - Titanium Backup Root\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\">Titanium Backup * root<\/a> app<\/li>\n<li>In Titatnium backup do the following:\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure the backup folder points to the folder that all the backups were stored in as the phone may not default to the same folder.\u00a0 Go to Menu -&gt; Preferences -&gt; Backup Folder Location<\/li>\n<li>Next restore the apps with Menu -&gt; Batch Actions -&gt; Restore missing apps + all system data\n<ol>\n<li>Becareful to only select the system data that will work with the new phone (SMS, call logs, contacts, etc) especially when switching brands.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know what will happen, but I&#8217;m sure it isn&#8217;t good<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Next ensure all the apps are link to the Play Store with Menu -&gt;
